Forward your existing number

Forward calls to your AI receptionist from your existing business number using your provider's own forwarding steps, then confirm it with a test call.

In Nuteq, you can forward the business number you already have to a Nuteq number, so your AI receptionist answers its calls while you keep your number and your provider. Forwarding is a setting at your provider, so you turn it on and off from your business phone or your provider's account, and Nuteq can never change it for you. Your business hours are set once per agent in Calendar, not per number.

Is forwarding the right option for me?

When you click Connect a number in Connections, Nuteq offers these options in order, and forwarding is the one it recommends.

  1. Forward my existing number keeps your business number and your current provider, and it's covered on this page.
  2. Get a new number gives your agent a dedicated local number in about a minute.
  3. Port my number to Nuteq moves your number's service to Nuteq, which takes 1 to 3 weeks and needs your carrier account details.
  4. Connect my phone system is for offices with their own phone system, and it has limited availability, so you request access first.

See Get or bring a phone number for when to choose each option.

What happens when I forward my number?

You choose when your receptionist answers.

  • When I don't answer: your phone rings first, and calls you don't pick up go to Nuteq. Your provider controls how long your phone rings before that happens. This is the recommended choice, and it's offered whenever your provider documents a way to do it.
  • Every call: Nuteq answers immediately and your business phone does not ring for incoming calls until you turn forwarding off. Setup shows that warning before it shows any steps, and again on the turn-on screen.

Forwarding also needs a Nuteq number for the calls to land on. If your agent doesn't have one yet, setup explains why and shows the monthly price before you buy one, and nothing is bought until you confirm the purchase.

Text messages are not forwarded. Texts sent to your business number keep going to your current provider. If Nuteq texts a caller, the text comes from your Nuteq number, and replies land in Nuteq.

Don't let your receptionist transfer calls to the same business number you forwarded. A call transferred to that number is forwarded straight back to Nuteq, so it goes around in a loop and never reaches a person. Use a different number for transfers, such as a mobile phone that isn't forwarded.

How do I set up forwarding?

Open Connections, go to the Phone tab, click Connect a number, and choose Forward my existing number. Setup then walks you through the steps in order.

  1. Choose the agent that should answer your calls, when your workspace has more than one.
  2. Enter the number your customers already call, pick its country and phone type — mobile, landline or office phone, or internet phone service — then pick your provider from the list. Pick "Other / I'm not sure" if your provider isn't listed. Confirm that you manage this phone line for the business.
  3. Choose the Nuteq number your calls will forward to, or buy one after you see its monthly price.
  4. Choose when your receptionist answers.
  5. Follow the turn-on steps for your provider, then tick "I've followed these steps on my business phone".
  6. Make a test call, and tell Nuteq what you heard.

Changing the number, country, phone type, or provider later clears your coverage choice and your test, because the instructions and the result both belong to the line you picked.

Forwarding steps by provider

Providers use different steps, and no single code works everywhere. Nuteq only ships a code when the provider's own page documents both turning it on and turning it off; otherwise setup gives you the provider's settings or portal steps and a script to read to their support team. US and Canadian entries were last checked on September 15, 2026, and UK entries on September 16, 2026. Setup shows that date and the source link on the turn-on screen.

Forwarding works for business numbers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and your Nuteq number is in the same country as your business number. See Supported countries.

In the US and Canadian codes, "your Nuteq number" means the 10 digits without the +1 country code, except on T-Mobile and Mint Mobile, which use 1 followed by the 10 digits. In the UK codes, setup fills in the number the way each provider asks for it: Vodafone uses +44 followed by the number without its first 0, and BT and TalkTalk use the full number starting with 0.

T-Mobile (United States, mobile)

T-Mobile documents a separate short code for each kind of call, and each one has its own reversal.

Dialing ##004# clears every kind of forwarding at once. T-Mobile controls how long your phone rings first, and you can ask them to change the delay. Because this product covers three kinds of unanswered call, setup tests them one at a time and shows which ones you have tested.

Rogers documents that forwarding unanswered calls can replace your voicemail, so Nuteq gives you no code for calls you don't answer. Bell texts you for free once forwarding is on. To turn it off, open the same menu, select the forwarding type, and follow the prompts to deactivate; Deactivate All also restores your voicemail. Bell charges call forwarding as a monthly add-on, or 25 cents a minute pay-per-use.

Other / I'm not sure

If your provider isn't on the list, pick "Other / I'm not sure". Setup gives you a script to read to your provider that asks how to turn forwarding on, how to turn it off, and whether it changes your voicemail. Many phones also have a Call forwarding screen in the phone app's settings, but only use it if your provider tells you to. The test call is what tells you whether it worked.

How do I know forwarding is working?

The test call is the only reliable check, because your provider's confirmation tone doesn't show that calls reach your receptionist. Follow the test in order.

  1. Click Start test in setup. Nuteq only counts calls that arrive after you start the test. You can enter the number you'll call from, which helps tell your test call apart from other callers.
  2. From another phone, call your business number — not your Nuteq number, which skips forwarding — let the receptionist answer, and hang up.
  3. Wait for the dashboard to show Call received, which can take a minute after you hang up.
  4. Click Yes, it answered when the dashboard asks whether you called your business number and heard the receptionist answer.
  5. If you chose "When I don't answer", Nuteq then asks whether your business phone rang first. Answer honestly: "No, Nuteq answered right away" means your provider may have turned on every-call forwarding, and Nuteq does not mark the condition tested.

Call received means a call reached your agent, and it doesn't prove the call came through your business number. Nuteq only shows Forwarding tested after you confirm what you dialed and heard, and that line records one moment in time — nothing watches your line afterwards. To check again later, open the number in Connections and click Test forwarding.

On a provider that covers several kinds of unanswered call, such as T-Mobile, one test proves one kind. After a success, the screen lists what is still untested and offers Test another condition.

If the dashboard shows No call reached Nuteq yet, work through the checklist it shows, then see Phone troubleshooting.

Turn forwarding off

Closing setup in Nuteq doesn't change anything at your provider, so forwarding stays on until you turn it off yourself. Turning forwarding off is also how you pause your receptionist: your phone and your own voicemail then work as before.

  1. Open Connections, go to the Phone tab, and click Manage forwarding on the Nuteq number.
  2. Click Turn off forwarding. Nuteq shows the turn-off steps for the exact coverage you turned on, not a general one — on T-Mobile, unanswered forwarding is cleared with ##61#, not the every-call code.
  3. Follow those steps on your business phone, or with your provider.
  4. Click Test that it's off, then call your business number from another phone. When your own phone answers, click "Yes, my phone answered". Nuteq shows "Your phone answered — forwarding is off." and records when you checked.

If Nuteq answers during that test, forwarding is still on: go back to the turn-off steps and try again. Nuteq also blocks releasing a Nuteq number while a setup still forwards to it and nobody has confirmed the phone answers again.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one forwarding code that works on every provider?
No. Providers use different codes, some use their own settings or account portal instead of a code, and plans differ too. Setup shows the steps for the provider and product you pick, with a link to that provider's own page, and the test call is what tells you it worked.
How do I stop forwarding my number to Nuteq?
Open the number in Connections, click Manage forwarding, then Turn off forwarding. Nuteq shows the turn-off steps for the exact coverage you turned on — on Verizon that is *73 — and then offers a test so you can confirm your own phone answers again.
Can my receptionist answer only the calls I miss?
Yes, when your provider documents a way to do it. Choose "When I don't answer" and your phone rings first, then unanswered calls go to Nuteq. Your provider controls how long your phone rings, and for some providers this coverage goes through their support rather than a code.
Does the agent stop answering outside business hours?
No. Your Nuteq agent answers calls to its number at any hour. The business hours you set in Calendar control when the agent books appointments, not when it answers.
Will forwarding my old number cost me anything extra?
Your provider may charge its normal rate for a forwarded call, the same as forwarding to any other number. Bell, for example, charges call forwarding as a monthly add-on or per minute. Check with your provider if you're unsure.
