Text messaging (SMS)

Text messaging with your AI receptionist: your agent texts customers from the number that answers your calls, after carrier registration passes.

Text messaging lets your AI receptionist send and receive SMS on the phone number that already answers your calls. A customer who texts your business gets an answer, as a caller does.

What it is for

A customer who prefers to text still reaches your agent. Over text, the agent can answer questions, capture a lead, or book an appointment. It uses the same instructions and knowledge as on the phone. Every text thread appears in Conversations with your calls. Customer messages do not go to a separate inbox.

Key terms

  • Text message registration. A one-time carrier check that a US business must pass before its number can send texts. See Register your business to send texts.
  • Opt-out. A customer's STOP reply. It stops all texts, calls, and WhatsApp messages to that number until the customer texts START.
  • Taking over a conversation. You send a reply yourself and not the agent. See Reply to a customer's text yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate number for texting?
No. Texting uses the same Nuteq AI phone number that answers your calls. You do not manage a second number.
Can my agent text customers automatically?
Yes. After your business is approved to send texts, your agent replies to incoming texts as it answers calls. It uses its instructions and knowledge.
Can I text a customer myself instead of the agent?
Yes. Reply from a customer's profile or the Needs attention list. The agent then pauses its answers to that customer for a while. You and the agent do not reply at the same time.
